The Indonesian BNPB ensures sufficient food supplies for the refugees on Mount Ruang

TEMPO.CO, Manado, North SulawesiDeputy for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction at the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Jarwansyah ensured adequate food supplies for the victims of the disaster. Mount Ruang eruption in Sitaro Islands district, North Sulawesi.

“Based on our calculation, the need for food for more than five thousand refugees will amount to approximately 14 tons by the end of the emergency response period on April 29, 2024,” he noted on Monday.

According to Jarwansyah, the need of 14 tons can be met or even exceeded with assistance from the North Sulawesi provincial government amounting to 23 tons, plus additional food supplies from the BNPB.

“Information from the Vice Governor of North Sulawesi states that 23 tons of rice will be shipped,” he noted.

Meanwhile, his agency also increased supplies by 8.5 tons, including five tons of stock in the warehouse that will be delivered to eruption refugees.

In addition, data was collected at 13 evacuation points, Jarwansyah said.

“At these evacuation points, we collect data on the number of elderly, children, men, women and students,” he noted.

He noted that one of the obstacles is fluctuating data, as several residents did not stay at the evacuation points, but sought shelter in the homes of their relatives.

Therefore, the BNPB, together with concerned officials, appealed to residents affected by the eruption to come and report at the evacuation points to be registered.

According to data from the Sitaro Islands District Government, about 3,582 refugees were affected by the eruption of Mount Ruang on Ruang Island and had been sheltered.

Mount Ruang can be reached in about three to four hours by fast boat from Manado Port.

Mount Ruang erupted on April 16, 2024 after an increase in seismic activity. The PVMBG upgraded its status three times on the same day.

The status was subsequently downgraded to Level III (Alert) after no more visible eruptions and a decrease in seismicity.
