Family of four displaced by Stratford fire: officials

The fire was one of two simultaneous fires that occurred in Stratford on Saturday, officials said.



STRATFORD, CT – Crews responded to simultaneous fires in Stratford on Saturday, one of which displaced a family of four, according to officials.

Authorities received multiple 911 calls about a fire on Freeman Avenue around 1 p.m., officials said. According to the Stratford Fire Department, emergency crews discovered flames coming from a backyard, as well as a home that was 70 percent on fire. Several exposed tanks had been draining propane, spreading flames to the fencing and starting small brush fires, authorities said. The fire was under control within about 45 minutes.

Around the same time, a porch fire was reported in the 700 block of Honeyspot Road, according to authorities, who said residents used a portable extinguisher to contain the flames with help from personnel from neighboring Stratford Guns & Ammo.

Authorities said the American Red Cross was called to assist the family displaced by the fire on Freeman Avenue. The exterior facade of the house had turned black due to the fire, according to images of the damage that the fire brigade had posted on Facebook.

Both incidents are under investigation, authorities said. Agencies from Milford, Bridgeport, Shelton and Trumbull assisted.

The Stratford Fire Department noted that residents can call 203-385-4073 for a free smoke detector examination, and that they should have an escape plan and not drive over a fire hose on the street, as this is dangerous to firefighters and can lead to burns. damage to both the hose and the vehicle.
