In an interview on Sunday, Mbewe argued that the presidential adviser on religious affairs is not enough to tackle the chaos and lawlessness in the faith sector.

His proposal follows reports that a 74-year-old prophetess, Jessie Window, is in police custody in Chiradzulu for allegedly masterminding the injury of an elderly man with disabilities in an attempt to stretch his legs after prayers for healing .

Mbewe expressed dismay and dismay at the chaos prevailing in the faith sector, adding that this does not augur well for the teachings of the various religions.

“It is against this background that I propose that the government should consider creating a full-fledged ministry to regulate the activities of religious groups. Religious groups must act within the law. But this can only be possible if there is a ministry that provides citizenship education to religious leaders,” he said.

Mbewe vowed that if his government were to take charge in the 2025 general election, it would strive to bring sanity to the religious sector.

“Bringing sanity to the religious sector will be one of my government’s priorities as I have observed that some faith leaders are deliberately misleading their followers. This must be stopped,” he said.

Meanwhile, South-East Region Police spokesperson, Edward Kabango, disclosed that the arrested prophetess was last night picked up from Chiradzulu District Hospital where she cheered the victim who is currently hospitalized.

Kabango said the incident occurred earlier last week when Window went to the victim’s Mangilani village, Ntchema Traditional Authority in the district, for some night prayers.
