Street Style during Milan Design Week can give MFW a run for its money

Salone del Mobile may give Milan Fashion Week value for money.

From Louis Vuitton to Loewe, Hermès to Loro Piana, fashion houses made up a notable part of the presentations in Milan and of the almost 2,000 exhibitors at the 62nd edition of Salone del Mobile. Not to be outdone, visitors dressed to impress with looks that rivaled the objects on display. Where the stylish set goes, WWD follows to document what they’re wearing.

Here are the top four street style trends of Milan Design Week 2024.

There’s a lot of cross-pollination between decorating a room and dressing yourself, but interior designers seem to have the upper hand when it comes to styling prints. From a clown suit to an argyle grandpa sweater and even a leopard print smock dress, these attendees pulled it off with ease, bringing all the fun of mismatched pillows to the streets.

Hand in hand with prints, the interiors team knows their way around color, a skill they display by painting the city red (and every other color under the sun, too). Color blocking was especially prominent on ultra-luxe outerwear styled in a very unaffected, Italian way: with low-heeled shoes and jeans. The latter is also a go-to for the indoor crowd.

Inventive fit

Although Salone has become a bit ‘scene-y’ in recent years, it is still a trade show and underneath the glamor there is serious business to be done. For those at work rather than play, inventive suits are appropriate, ranging from more sartorial with traditional heritage fabrics to more avant-garde, like this monochrome black skirt suit with the sharpest of shoulders.

Useful accents

The hunt for the best of the best in interiors and homewares is no cakewalk, so it’s easy to see why utilitarian influences would be popular, especially seen in the oversized patch pockets and sturdy cotton fabrics worn in ton- sur-ton neutral colors. They may have been on the understated side, but these workwear looks still had an impact thanks to their play on proportion.
