New state-of-the-art animal hospital in Hull gets the green light

A new, state-of-the-art animal hospital is opening in Hull.

The current People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) facility on Brusnwick Avenue can no longer keep up with demand and has submitted plans for a new hospital on land adjacent to Brusnwick Avenue and Waterloo Street. Hull City Council’s planning committee has now given approval.

The new location is the former home of the Waterloo Street store, which was demolished several years ago. The area became a constant target of vandalism and arson.

The brownfield land will now be purchased from the council and will become a modern animal hospital run by the PDSA. The charity provides free and low-cost veterinary care for animals and pets in need, as well as advice and support on animal care.

Hull City Council says the redeveloped site, which will care for sick animals, will see capital investment, create more jobs and help reduce anti-social behavior in the area. In 2023, the PDSA helped support nearly 8,000 households in the city, while conducting 15,493 consultations and 1,000 operations.

Neil Howbridge, deputy director of property and assets at Hull City Council, said: “I am delighted that planning permission has been granted for this facility. Not only will it help allay concerns about anti-social behavior and eradicate an overgrown site, but it will also enable the PDSA to continue its excellent work.”

John Faulkner, head regional vet for PDSA said: “We are pleased to have been given the green light for our plans for a new Hull PDSA Pet Hospital, next to our current site on Brunswick Avenue. Our dedicated team in Hull provide an incredible service to local pet owners, but a larger animal hospital will allow us to increase our capacity and provide an even better, more efficient service.
