The following is a press release from the Arcata Fire District:

On Wednesday, April 24 at 12:46 p.m., the Arcata Fire District was alerted to a multi-family fire in the 4000 block of Valley East Blvd.

The first of Arcata Fire’s engines arrived on scene and encountered a two-story apartment building, where smoke detectors were going off and smoke was coming from the window of the lower right apartment.

The fire brigade entered the apartment complex and started looking for any residents. There were no residents in the apartment and the fire was limited to one bedroom. The fire was then quickly extinguished.

After investigation, it was determined that the fire was accidental. Due to the loss of property and belongings, residents were issued a SAVE card. SAVE is a program of the California Fire Foundation that provides immediate, short-term assistance to victims of fire or other natural disasters.

This is a perfect example of the activation and functioning of smoke detectors. The neighbors heard the alarm go off, smelled smoke and called 911.

Arcata Fire would like to urge residents to ensure their smoke detectors are functioning properly by testing them monthly – just press the ‘test’ button.

Arcata Fire District would like to thank Blue Lake Fire District, Humboldt Bay Fire and CalFire for their response, and Samoa Peninsula Fire District for their coverage of the AFD stations during the call.
