Jerry Seinfeld thinks the movie business is “over.”

It was the famous screenwriter William Goldman who once said about the film industry: “No one knows anything.” And that may very well be true, with Jerry Seinfeld now agreeing that Hollywood is just as stupid as many people think.

Jerry Seinfeld has rarely participated in films, and his only real role outside of documentaries is as the very meme-able bee movie. But with Immature drop on 3rd of Mayhe noticed a few things that he otherwise wouldn’t have noticed. “It was completely new to me. I thought I had done some cool stuff, but it was nothing like the way these people work. They are so deadly serious! They have no idea that the film industry is over. They have no idea.” So what’s the deal with Hollywood? Seinfeld elaborated on this, saying that the business and consumption of movies is not nearly what it was in generations past. “Film does not occupy the pinnacle of the social, cultural hierarchy as it has for most of our lives. Whenever a movie came out, we all went to see it if it was good. We’ve discussed it all. We quoted lines and scenes we liked. Now we walk through a fire hose of water, just to see.” Yet Seinfeld seems to embrace this Immature premieres on Netflix.

Jerry Seinfeld may have a good point here. While there is still a focus on box office figures, many film fans consume material in different ways. While the cinema once was the place to watch a movie, you can now watch it at your leisure on Netflix, for example. For such films, there is no opening and no showtimes – there is ‘Start’ and ‘Resume’. Take Adam Sandler for example. When BillyMadison And Happy Gilmore were hits, it gave fans of the Sandman something to talk about and gave them quotes to throw at each other endlessly. Now, with his Netflix deal, at what point should fans do that? Quality aside, you’re right heard Has anyone quoted one of his Netflix movies?

Jerry Seinfeld would, expectedly, continue to defend the craft of stand-up comedy, saying that what comedians bring to the table is something that can’t be imitated. “It’s like platform diving. You might say you’re a platform diver, but in two seconds we can tell if you are or not. That’s what people love about stand-up. They can rely on it. Everything else is fake.”

While many of us thought the idea of Jerry Seinfeld directing a movie about the history of Pop-Tarts was itself fake, it is indeed real… and looks much better than expected.
