ICAO crucial for developing countries: Gavoka – FBC News

Deputy Prime Minister Villiame Gavoka has emphasized that the presence of an International Civil Aviation Organization in the Pacific is crucial for small island developing states.

Gavoka says the established ICAO office in Nadi will help strengthen and facilitate relationship building between SIDS.

He added that some states do not have the full capacity to carry out their ICAO membership duties, and therefore the regional office will assist in this regard.

“Most PSIDs do not have the capabilities to fully meet their ICAO membership obligations or to participate constructively in programs and get the best possible benefit from their membership. That is why an ICAO presence in the Pacific is an essential part of the reinforcement.”

Gavoka says Shane Sumner was appointed Pacific Liaison Officer for ICAO in August last year.

He adds that Sumner’s role includes facilitating improvements in aviation regulatory and technical outcomes, assisting SIDS with research and capability challenges, and improving communications with stakeholders.
