Google Doodle celebrates global conservation efforts

Today’s Google homepage features a new Doodle to celebrate Earth Day 2024. The Doodle features breathtaking aerial photographs that showcase the planet’s rich biodiversity and natural beauty. Each letter in the Google logo highlights conservation efforts around the world that help protect the environment.

The ‘G’ paid tribute to the Turks and Caicos Islands, known for their biodiversity and ongoing efforts to protect natural resources and endangered species. The ‘O’ marked Mexico’s Scorpion Reef National Park, the largest reef system in the southern Gulf that protects coral and marine life.

Additionally, Iceland’s Vatnajökull National Park, which has glaciers and unique ecosystems, was represented by the second ‘O’. The ‘G’ characterizes the Jaú National Park in Brazil, one of the largest protected rainforest areas in South America. The letter ‘L’ represented Nigeria’s Great Green Wall initiative, which is restoring degraded land from coast to coast in Africa. The final ‘E’ honored the nature reserves of Australia’s Pilbara Islands, part of a network of reserves protecting ecosystems, habitats and threatened species Down Under.

The Doodle highlighted examples of environmental stewardship worldwide and served as an Earth Day reminder of humanity’s role in preserving the planet. The theme of this year’s Earth Day is ‘Planet vs. Plastics’, advocating policies to combat plastic pollution and the transition to more sustainable systems.

In addition, Google is working on new features that will improve Maps and search functions for electric vehicle (EV) drivers, allowing them to accurately locate compatible chargers. These changes coincide with Earth Day; you can read them all here.
