Javier González Olaechea | Chancellor after lifting the visa requirement for Mexicans: “It was not to affect tourism” | Ministry of Foreign Affairs | Mexico | Visa | Policy

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Javier González Olaechea, has explained the reasons behind the decision to cancel visa applications for Mexicans. The decision comes after a back-and-forth over the visa requirement, which was initially proposed in response to similar restrictions imposed on Peruvians in Mexico.

González Olaechea stated that the decision to lift the visa requirement was made after an assessment showed that it could have a negative impact on tourism and subsequently on the Peruvian economy. Initially, the visa application was based on the principle of reciprocity, as the Chancellor stated. However, after re-evaluating the situation and considering the possible consequences, it was decided to withdraw the requirement.

In addition, González Olaechea said the decision to revoke the visa requirement was also influenced by Mexico’s complaint about an incident in which Ecuador raided its embassy. This situation was used as an opportunity to issue the second statement announcing the abolition of the visa requirement, while maintaining respect for the Pacific Alliance Agreement.

In response to Mexico’s initial decision to introduce a visa requirement for Peruvian citizens, the Mexican government postponed the implementation of this policy until May 6. This delay is attributed to the need to adequately prepare and implement the new agreement as stated in the agreement. Government Gazette of the Federation.

For Peruvian citizens who plan to visit Mexico and need a visa, there are specific requirements that must be met. This includes scheduling a free appointment through the MY CONSULATE web portal, completing the visa form, presenting the original passport along with a copy, providing a photo and paying a fee of US$53. It will be recommended for Peruvian citizens to apply for their visa at least five weeks before their travel date and only make travel-related payments after receiving the visa.
