Where to find your new furry friend in Livingston County

LIVINGSTON COUNTY — Spring is a time of new beginnings, and Livingston County makes it easy to turn those new beginnings into a new pet.

The province’s many rescue organizations promote an “adopt, don’t shop” policy, which is relatively affordable and provides the comfort that comes with providing an animal with a loving home.

Livingston County Animal Shelter

The Livingston County Animal Shelter, which shelters and cares for more than 2,000 animals per year, is one of the largest centers in the county. The Howell-based organization has both foster and adoption programs. They also operate a database of lost and found animals to help owners reconnect with their pets.

To adopt an animal from the Livingston County Animal Shelter, all family members and other dogs must first meet the pet they are considering adopting. Dogs at home must be neutered, sprayed and approved.

From there, families can fill out adoption applications. The cost ranges from $80 to $200 depending on the age and type of pet being adopted. Their website at tinyurl.com/52rmtdkh offers an updated list of their furry friends looking for a new home.

Siamese Rescue in Michigan

Dogs not your thing? Michigan Siamese Rescue specializes not only in cats, but also in Siamese cats. Their website recognizes that Siamese cats are particularly unsuitable for shelter environments, and the organization strives to remove them from those situations and provide loving homes.

Michigan Siamese Rescue does not operate from a specific location. The organization’s adoption policy states that prospective households must have a person over the age of 25, and existing pets must, among other things, be indoors only, be up to date on vaccinations and be sprayed or neutered.

They also suggest adopting kittens in pairs. Interested parties must apply and be approved before they can adopt. The standard adoption fee is $200.

Horse Haven

Horses Haven is a very different kind of animal shelter. Founded in 1995, the nonprofit organization focuses on rescuing, training and providing new homes for horses. They also have ponies, donkeys and mules.

While the organization has standard adoption and surrender processes, they also offer a sponsorship program. Sponsors can pay to cover horses’ medical costs in exchange for personalized photos, endorsements and merchandise. This way, interested parties can donate and still be involved without having to take full care of a horse.
