Police release images of man wanted after fatal shooting Akl

Police have released images of an “extremely dangerous” man investigators are looking for after a fatal shooting in Auckland’s Ponsonby late last night.

A man was found dead outside a Central Auckland street address following “reports of a firearm being discharged”.

Detective Inspector Chris Barry said the wanted man had been turned away from a bar before the shooting as it was about to close.

“He was seen walking around on Ponsonby Rd towards the end of Richmond Road.”

A group of four people, including the victim, left a parked car on Ponsonby Rd about 10.15pm and walked towards the man, Barry said.

“Investigations to date indicate that multiple shots were fired.

“Police have now identified the man as the perpetrator and are urgently appealing for information from the public to help us identify him.”

Police cordons remain in the area after officers were called late last night.

The man is described as being of large build, with dark hair and facial hair, and a large tattoo on his forearm.”

Investigators now want the public’s help to identify him, but warn he is considered “extremely dangerous” and should not be approached.

“The man was then seen walking south on Ponsonby Road, towards Richmond Road, following the incident.”

Earlier today, Detective Sergeant Craig Bolton said emergency services responded to “reports of a firearm being discharged” outside an address on Ponsonby Rd at around 10.18pm.

“On arrival a deceased man was found,” he said.

“The investigation into the person believed to be responsible remains ongoing.”

Detective Inspector Chris Barry holds up the photo of an alleged suspect.

Cordons manned by armed officers were in place this morning and Bolton said the community can expect an increased police presence in the area.

A body covered in a white sheet was previously seen on the footpath of Ponsonby Rd. Neighbors told 1News they heard gunshots last night.

Bolton said a “number of witnesses” had been spoken to.

“Although no arrests have been made at this stage, police are monitoring the investigation.”

A post-mortem and formal identification of the victim will be carried out in the coming days.

Police say a man was found dead outside an address on Ponsonby Rd after a shooting on Sunday evening.

Ponsonby Rd resident Truda Chadwick told 1News she had just arrived home last night when she heard helicopters circling overhead.

“I felt really cold,” she said. “It was actually a very strange feeling and I’ve never actually felt that before.”

Chadwick said she didn’t hear any shots or see any bikers hanging around, as reported by other neighbors.

“Ponsonby was always a bit playful in that area a long time ago, I think, but we haven’t had anything like that in so long.”

She said she generally feels “pretty safe” living on Ponsonby Rd.

“I’ve lived here for so long; things change and evolve, but it all gets a bit tricky I think with the safety in New Zealand, but I think it’s like anywhere else.

“I don’t know what was behind this or if it was a random event.”

NZTA Waka Kotahi said Ponsonby Rd has been closed between Franklin and Richmond roads due to a “police incident”.

“Avoid the area and expect long delays.”

“Police are encouraging anyone who was in the area or has information to help who has not yet spoken to us to get in touch,” Bolton said.
