Students develop natural pesticides to protect animal health

MUSCAT: In a breakthrough in animal welfare, a student-led initiative from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Musannah, South Al Batinah Governorate, has come up with a solution to combat insect pests that harm animals.

Protex, a student company, has developed a natural pesticide to eradicate fleas and insects that often plague animals. The innovation addresses an urgent problem in the market, where existing chemical-based solutions pose risks to both animals and the environment.

Saeed bin Hamad Al Shafei, Executive Director of Protex, highlighted the team’s commitment to creating a safe and sustainable alternative to traditional pesticides.

Al Shafei said the product, which has undergone rigorous testing in internationally accredited laboratories, outperforms its chemical counterparts in terms of effectiveness while ensuring the safety of animals. Omar bin Juma Al Jahdhami, a quality control technician at Protex, highlighted the meticulous production process currently underway at the university facilities in Mussanah. Al Jahdhami noted the upcoming issuance of certificates of conformity by regulatory authorities, marking a crucial milestone before the product’s market debut.

Abdul Aziz bin Mahmoud Al Abri, member of Protex, shared insights into the company’s journey, which started with eight students combining their diverse expertise on October 3, 2023.

Through extensive research and experimentation, led by the Research Center for Animal Production in the Wilayat of Barka, the team achieved their breakthrough.

Protex’s efforts have received recognition and achieved the highest honor at the South Al Batinah Governorate level of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI). Furthermore, the company has advanced to the second phase of the prestigious INJAZ Oman competition, underscoring its potential for broader impact.

With over 56 sales and purchase agreements already in place across their diverse range of products, Protex is poised to revolutionize animal care practices and set a new standard for efficacy and environmental responsibility in pest control.

This success story not only reflects the spirit of innovation fostered at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, but also illustrates the potential of young Omani talent to drive meaningful change across diverse sectors.
