Kutsaga research

The Tobacco Research Board (TRB) has been renamed Kutsaga as anti-tobacco sentiment has grown in Zimbabwe and the world at large. According to the company, the rebrand was a strategic refocus on research into alternative uses of tobacco and profitable alternative crops for the plant.

The rebrand came at an opportune time following the legalization of medicinal and industrial hemp in Zimbabwe.

The Tobacco Research Board was established in 1950 under the Tobacco Research Act (Chapter 18:21). Its mandate is to lead, monitor and implement tobacco research in Zimbabwe. The TRB’s mission is “To develop and deliver elite varieties and innovative agriculture-based technical services and products to maximize the economic value of sustainable tobacco production.”

The TRB has exclusive rights to influenza research in Zimbabwe. All tobacco varieties sold in Zimbabwe must be the TRB recommended tobacco varieties. In addition, all agrochemicals used on tobacco must be approved by the TRB before use, in terms of the Tobacco Marketing and Levy Act. The Council emphasizes scientific and evidence-based management of the crop by growers.

TRB’s headquarters are located at the world-famous Kutsaga Research Station on the outskirts of Harare.
