Driver dies after crashing his vehicle into the White House gate

A driver was killed Saturday evening after his vehicle crashed into a White House gate, U.S. authorities said.

The man was found dead in the vehicle after the crash near an exterior gate of the White House complex shortly before 10:30 p.m., the U.S. Secret Service said in a statement.

Security protocols were implemented, but the agency said there was no threat to the White House.

The driver was not immediately identified.

The Secret Service will continue to investigate the case and will turn the fatal crash portion of the investigation over to the Washington Metropolitan Police Department, the agency said.

The Washington Metropolitan Police Department said the vehicle struck a safety barrier at the intersection of 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

β€œAt this time, the incident is only being investigated as a traffic accident by MPD’s large investigative unit,” Metro Police said in a statement on social media.
