Missing zebra captured after six days on the run in Washington state

The female mare, named Shug, was one of four zebras that escaped on April 28.

A missing zebra that was on the run for nearly a week after escaping from a trailer in Washington state was rounded up over the weekend, officials announced Saturday.

The female mare, named Shug, was one of four zebras that escaped from a trailer near North Bend, Washington — about 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of Seattle — on April 28, according to a news release from King County Regional Animal Services.

The group of zebras was being transported from Winlock, Washington, to Anaconda, Montana, when the animals got loose while the owner had reportedly stopped to troubleshoot a problem with the trailer, the organization said, noting that the other three zebras were recaptured within hours of the action. the escape.

However, Shug left the caravan’s location on Interstate 90 and traversed the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range for six days, “where he was occasionally spotted by residents and caused an international sensation,” the organization said.

On Friday, the viral search for Shug came to an end when the animal was captured by a group of private citizens and animal control officers from King County Regional Animal Services.

Shug was located in the woods in the Riverbend neighborhood, according to the organization.

“The zebra appeared to be in good condition despite her nearly week-long adventure in the woods,” the King County Regional Wildlife Service said.

The organization said it would announce additional details about Shug’s recapture soon, but noted that the zebra will continue its original journey to Montana.
