Pakistan endures unprecedented rainfall in April, surpassing six decades of records

Pakistan has recorded its wettest April since 1961, with more than double the usual rainfall for the month, the national weather center said.

The country experienced days of extreme weather in April, killing dozens of people and destroying property and farmland. Experts said that Pakistan was witnessing heavier rainfall due to climate change.

Last month’s rainfall in Pakistan was 164% higher than the usual level in April, according to a report published Friday by Pakistan’s National Weather Center.

The heavy rains hit the northwestern provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the southwestern provinces of Baluchistan the most.

The devastating summer floods of 2022 have killed at least 1,700 people in just a few months, destroyed millions of homes, wiped out swathes of farmland and caused billions of dollars in economic losses.

At one point, a third of the country was under water. Pakistani leaders and many scientists around the world blamed climate change for the unusually early and heavy monsoon rains.
