Delhi court orders action against improper use of oxytocin in dairy colonies – Goemkarponn

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has issued guidelines to combat the use of fake oxytocin hormone in dairy colonies in the national capital, stressing the need to tackle animal cruelty and public health issues.
A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet PS Arora held that administering Oxytocin without proper consent constitutes an offense under relevant law.

The court was hearing a plea alleging violation of various laws in Delhi’s dairy colonies filed by Sunayana Sibal, Asher Jessudoss and Akshita Kukreja.

The court asked the Department of Drugs Control, GNCTD, to conduct regular inspections and ensure that cases of improper use or possession of oxytocin are registered under relevant laws.

Moreover, the Intelligence Wing of Delhi Police has been tasked with identifying the sources of oxytocin and taking legal action against the offenders.

The plea pointed out the need to shift dairies to areas with adequate infrastructure and sanitary conditions to protect public health and prevent animal cruelty.

The court expressed concern about the dairy farms located near the dumps and emphasized the urgency of relocating such facilities due to the potential health risks posed by contaminated feed and milk.

While the court recognized the need for reinstatement, it postponed issuing binding guidelines pending further consultation with relevant officials. The court also ordered key officials from municipal bodies, veterinary departments and food safety authorities to participate in the proceedings on May 8.

Officials have been tasked with exploring suitable locations for relocation and coordinating efforts to address the complex issues surrounding dairy operations in Delhi.
