Fashion reawakened at the 2024 Met Gala

This past school year I wrote articles about everything related to popular culture. From book recommendations to the Barbenheimer debate, to celebrity interviews, to love on television shows, and—most recently—to the beauty of Lana Del Rey’s Coachella performance, I feel like I’ve covered every square inch of popular culture possible.

That said, while I am extremely passionate about all of these topics – literature, film, relationships and music – there is another area of ​​the pop culture universe that I simply must talk about: fashion.

This topic is particularly topical because it is that time of year again when I am reminded of my childhood obsessed of Project Runway. In other words, the Met Gala is just around the corner.

Wait, what’s the Met Gala?

I’m so glad you asked! The Met Gala is an annual fundraiser held in New York in honor of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Every year, hundreds of the most prominent figures in art and culture are invited. The lucky attendees of such a prestigious event walk the beloved red carpet, attend a mysterious dinner and create headlines for a week. who spoke to whom And who wore whatwhich ultimately raised thousands of dollars for the museum.

Even though I know deep down that I absolutely would kill it on the Met Gala red carpet, I don’t think the fashion world is quite ready for that yet. So unfortunately I won’t be there this year.

In reality, each guest must be personally chosen and invited by the iconic Fashion editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. What’s more, according to a recent article in the New York Times, the price of a ticket has increased by $25,000 from last year, bringing the cost of attendance this year to a whopping $75,000. Crazy, right?

Nevertheless, plenty of society’s most beloved stars from film, fashion, music, sports and – in recent years – social media will be there, glittering and glittering, and making me extremely jealous.

While the official guest list is always relatively secretive, there are a few people we can expect to see, like the event hosts. This year’s Met Gala is hosted by Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth – a unique group in itself. It is also evident from an article Variety, the red carpet livestream will be hosted by Gwendoline Christie, La La Anthony and Ashley Graham. Emma Chamberlain, my personal favorite addition to the Met Gala scene, will also return as Vogues correspondent to conduct her delightful red carpet interviews.

Personally, I’m most excited to see what Zendaya wears to the gala, as she and her stylist, Law Roach, have consistently raised the bar on fashion in recent years, especially during the recent press tour for her new movie, Challengers. For those of you who have seen it Challengers I’m already guessing her costars, Mike Faist and Josh O’Conner, will also be at this year’s Met Gala. Lucky us!

So, what will everyone wear?

Deviating from the simpler theme of last year’s Met Gala, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” this year’s theme is more metaphorical and will pay tribute to the Costume Institute’s latest exhibit, titled “Sleeping Beauties : Reawakening Fashion. ”

According to a Fashion article, the exhibition itself will focus on pieces that are simply too fragile to ever be worn again. Fragility and beauty, aesthetics and transience: these motifs form the direct link between the fashion in the exhibition and the official dress code of the Met Gala, namely ‘The Garden of Time’. As Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge, says, the exhibition – and therefore the gala itself – “will be very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion.”

It is difficult to put into words how excited I am about this theme. I expect it to be somewhat reminiscent of the glamor and beauty of an earlier Met Gala theme, ‘Heavenly Bodies’, which would be unbelievable to see. I suspect that, as always, there will be some disappointing looks, but I also hope that the attendees and their stylists are willing to push the boundaries of what fashion can be, especially for an exhibition about fashion reawakening.

This year the Met Gala, which takes place every year on the first Monday in May, falls on May 6.
