Willa Elizabeth, a beacon of courage and love, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2024, after a brave battle with brain cancer. Born August 24, 2014 in St. Albert, she was a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, nephew and friend. Willa’s nine years were marked by her indomitable spirit and her ability to inspire everyone she met.
Willa was the beloved daughter of Michael and Andrea, and the adored big sister of Weston. Her bond with her family was the cornerstone of her life. She was the pride and joy of her grandparents, Lynn Mulrooney (Nana), the late William Mulrooney (Poppy), Huguette Bouffard (Grandmother) and Bruce & Debbie Tomchuk (Grandpa & Nana). Willa was also lovingly remembered by her great-grandmother, Jeannine Bouffard (Memere), and was fondly remembered by her late great-grandparents, Elizabeth (Gammy) and Cyril Martin. Her extended family of cousins, aunts and uncles will forever hold the memory of Willa’s bright spirit in their hearts.
A special thank you to Dr. Chatur (Willa’s GP) who was with us when Willa passed away to make sure it went exactly as we wanted. Also to her home care team and Willa’s bedside nurses for making the past few weeks as calm and comforting as they have been for Willa, but also for our family. We will forever carry our absolute appreciation for you in our hearts.
Willa’s love for Disney was as wide as the ocean, with a particular fondness for the iconic villains that were as complex and vivid as her own imagination. The sight of the Disney Castle on screen was enough to light up her entire being, a joy that was even greater when she saw it in person. Her world was painted in her favorite color, purple, a hue that embodied the depth and warmth of her personality, just like her precious purple baby bunny that never left her side.
Willa’s love for the cuddly koalas stemmed from her favorite movie ‘Sing’, a film that captured her heart and filled her with happiness. Willa was a water baby through and through, and swimming was one of her favorite pastimes. She found solace in the water, where she could be free and buoyant, embracing the freedom the water offered.
Willa loved being part of a school community. The presence of her classmates and friends brought so much shine to her eyes. She was often irritated when Mrs. Joyce (her head nurse who went to school with her) stood in front of her and blocked the children from her view.
Books were windows into magical worlds for Willa, and those who had the privilege of reading to her knew that they held a special place in her life. Her recent adventure into the realms of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson brought new dimensions of wonder to her already vivid imagination.
Loving, courageous and energetic are the words that best describe Willa. She faced her journey with a courage that belied her years and a sweet face that touched all who knew her. Despite adversity, Willa showed us what true courage looks like, reminding us of the words of AA Milne: “You are braver than you think, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.”
Willa’s legacy is one of love and courage. She taught us to cherish every moment, find joy in the little things and approach life with a fearless heart. Her spirit will continue to be a guiding light for her family and all who were blessed to know her.
Willa Elizabeth’s life was a precious gift to us all, and although her time here was shorter than we had hoped, the impact she made will be felt for generations. As we say goodbye to this remarkable young soul, we take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace, free from pain, and that her legacy of love and courage will continue to inspire us every day.
A ceremony will take place on Friday, May 10 at 2:00 PM at St. Albert Funeral Home, where Willa was born and where she breathed her last, surrounded by the love of her family and the community that adored her. Her light will shine forever in the hearts of those she leaves behind. If you wish, we ask you to wear purple.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider donating to charities near and dear to Willa and our family’s hearts.
