Russell Roof Tiles extends its sustainability credentials to include solar PV

RUSSELL Roof Tiles has launched its first solar PV offering as part of its commitment to sustainability.

The independent manufacturer of concrete roof tiles and accessories said the new launch offers the same quality credentials and ease of installation as its concrete products.

After 18 months of research and development, the new RussFast Solar in-roof solar energy system has been designed to be compatible with most Russell Roof Tiles profiles, providing high-quality roof aesthetics for both commercial and domestic specifications.

This is the latest in an ‘extensive’ series of strategic investments the company has made in its sustainability commitment over the past decade. Russell Roof Tiles announced its 2040 net zero target more than two years ago, and the company said it has already taken “significant” steps towards its targets by purchasing 100% renewable electricity at all three production sites. This is in addition to the electrification of the ‘majority’ of its mobile factory fleet.

Over the past two years the company has invested more than £3.25 million in the 10-acre Lochmaben factory, including a major £750,000 upgrade last year, which is one of the largest upgrades since operations began in 1986. The company explained that the works will improve efficiency and speed up production and include a new and better insulated curing chamber with a modern and improved heating system.

Russell Roof Tiles added that the launch of RussFast Solar will enable the company to make the most of the growing renewable energy market and help meet Part L of the Building Regulations. It’s not just residential projects that commercial markets are looking to decarbonize, and solar is a popular choice for carbon-free electricity, the company added. In addition, local authorities are also looking at solar PV on public buildings and social housing.

The system features all the elements required for a comprehensive range of roof tiles specifically designed to work with all of Russell Roof Tiles interlocking tile profiles. The RussFast Solar system can be installed in a variety of configurations and sits within the roof covering, offering “excellent” aesthetics and “flexibility” to suit any project or tile type, the company said.

Dan Hancox, director of corporate sustainability and development at Russell Roof Tiles, commented: “Our market-leading offering offers a 15-year roof system warranty when installed as part of a full RussSpec and fitted in accordance with our guidelines. Our solar panels are the first on the market to offer a 30-year performance guarantee.

“We really focused on developing a solar PV system that can be installed by roofers in a similar way to traditional concrete roof tiles, with an interlocking system designed for quick and easy installation and that replaces the traditional imitates laying tiles.”

Andrew Hayward, MD of Russell Roof Tiles, added: “We are extremely excited to be bringing RussFast Solar to market and it is an important part of our ongoing sustainability development. It is a tangible demonstration of our intention to encourage the market to reduce emissions.”
