WITH GALA 2024 HAND AND DRESS CODE

This year’s theme is a celebration of 400 years of fashion and its evolution at every stage. This year, all A-listers will have to choose an outfit inspired by the Costume Institute’s spring 2024 exhibition, which focuses on breathing new life into old garments from centuries ago. In this way, we evolve together with fashion and adapt it to our perspectives before the lens of the world.

According to a report by Vogue, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will have nearly 250 items on display. The pieces span more than 400 years of fashion history and include designs from Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy and more. Some garments too fragile to ever be worn again, such as an 1877 Charles Frederick Worth ball gown, will also be showcased via video animation, light projection, AI, CGI and other forms of sensory stimulation.

DID YOU KNOW THAT GALA THEME 2024 IS INSPIRED BY A BOOK

The official dress code for this year’s Met Gala is based on JG Ballard’s book, ‘The Garden of Time’. It is a short story published in 1962. Ballard was an English novelist, satirist and essayist known for his provocative works.

The short story explores the concept of dystopian modernity. It is about the handsome, sophisticated Count Axel and his wife who live in a villa full of rare books, vases and opulent items. But outside the walls, the landscape is empty as far as the eye can see, until an unruly mob appears in the distance. However, every time Count Axel cuts a flower from his garden, time rewinds and the brutal mass retreats behind the hills.

The lively, thought-provoking short story is often seen as a metaphor for the evolution of human history and the endless cycle of creation and destruction, a theme clearly reflected in The Met’s Sleeping Beauties exhibition.
