Mauricio Pochettino has urged Chelsea to clarify Conor Gallagher’s future after fans called for him to stay.

The midfielder was welcomed onto the pitch with a banner organized by fans. It unfolded to show Gallagher in action for Blues, alongside the caption: “Chelsea since birth.”

The banner appears to be a direct response to doubts over the 24-year-old’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge. There have been suggestions that it could be sold this summer to address any concerns about profitability and sustainability – any sale representing pure gain on the balance sheet due to the fact that it has graduated from the academy.

Gallagher also has just over a year remaining on his contract in West London. Pochettino has now tried to intervene. The Argentinian has demanded a decision on the situation sooner or later.

After Thursday’s 2-0 win over Tottenham, the Chelsea boss said: “I’m not involved, I don’t know anything, I can’t tell you. I think you can see that I was strong with him all season.

“He is of course an important player. But I’m not involved in the decision, it’s the club and Conor. “I’m not involved, that’s a situation they have to resolve between the club and the player.”

Gallagher played his part in Thursday’s victory over Spurs – a win that effectively leaves Chelsea in the race for European football. His free-kick was nodded in by fellow academy student Trevoh Chalobah.
