Jamaican Minister of Tourism Bartlett sees Port Royal as the most important destination in the Caribbean

Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, foresees a vibrant future for Port Royal, saying it will be “the largest and most exciting destination in the Caribbean.”

Although he acknowledges that it is not there yet, Bartlett exuded confidence in its trajectory during a post-cabinet press conference on Wednesday.

A gem in the making

Bartlett aims to address concerns about the perceived slow pace of tourism development in the seaside resort, suggesting that Port Royal’s challenges are not entirely self-inflicted.

He points to its geographic location on the south side of Jamaica, where no cruise itineraries are currently available.

Overcoming challenges

To transform Port Royal into a desirable destination, Bartlett emphasizes the need for strategic initiatives.

This includes establishing partnerships with boutique cruise ships for direct access to Port Royal.

Bartlett assures that efforts are underway, with stakeholders including Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Professor Gordon Shirley, CEO of the Ports Authority of Jamaica, actively involved in the development process.
