The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of a soldier in Millennium City, Kasoa, located in the Central Region.

According to a statement dated May 1, 2024, police said the incident occurred on April 30, 2024, at about 4:20 PM, when the suspect, identified as Benlord Ababio, allegedly fired shots seriously injuring the soldier.

Despite receiving immediate medical attention at the Mother and Child Hospital in Kasoa, the soldier succumbed to his injuries.

“Preliminary police investigation has revealed that the suspect, Benlord Ababio, allegedly shot the soldier at Millennium City, Kasoa, on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at about 4:20 p.m.

“The victim suffered gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Mother and Child Hospital, Kasoa, for medical attention. However, he was later declared dead by medical authorities.

“Suspect Benlord Ababio is currently in custody and assisting police investigations. “The police leadership is in contact with the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces as investigations into the incident continue,” the statement continued.

Police have assured the public that they will be kept informed of any developments as the investigation progresses.

Two other soldiers were involved in the incident. They were reportedly in the car during the gun attack but survived.

Their current whereabouts are unknown.

Shot by a sub-chief who was said to be a land guard

According to Adom News, the soldiers were shot at by an alleged land guard, who is also a deputy chief.

The bullet hit the soldier who was driving.

A video circulating on social media shows the officer slumped in his seat with the car in a ditch, apparently after the driver lost control.

The back glass is shattered and blood is visible from the head portion of the deceased.

The car is left on a deserted road, without the other two officers in sight.
