Hollywood has always been a place of extremes and excesses, but for many celebrities, a calmer, more sedate life of sobriety is what gets them high these days.

Toxic celebrity culture has long caused Hollywood’s biggest names to fall victim to alcoholism or have their lives derailed due to dangerous drinking habits.

However, what used to be gossip fodder is slowly but surely shifting to a thoughtful conversation about the benefits of getting sober.

According to alcohol awareness organization Drinkaware, the proportion of non-drinking adults (16+ years) increased from 16% to 20% between 2011 and 2021 – proving that more and more people are turning away from spirits.

Candid conversations grow daily as celebrities share their milestones, honest reflections and toughest moments in interviews, with some revealing the more harrowing side effects of booze and admitting they were ‘addicted to alcohol’ and trapped in ‘binge drinking’ cycles.

So here are some celebrities you might not know have sworn off drinking…

Earlier in March, Hathaway had explained why drinking wasn’t for her and why quitting has “made everything better.”

“It just felt so extreme to have to say, ‘But none?’ But no. If you are allergic to something or have an anaphylactic reaction to something, don’t argue about it. So I stopped arguing,” she told Vanity Fair.

In July, he said he was “absolutely addicted to alcohol” and that he “drank and drank and drank,” until one day he asked himself, “Why am I addicted to this drink?” Why am I so obsessed with the idea of drinking this drink?”

After setting himself a six-month sobriety goal, he quickly realized that he was the “happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”

In 2022, he spoke more about his commitment to sobriety and breaking with family history in conversation with Jamie Lee Curtis.

“I am ending what has been a generational problem in my biological family,” he told Variety.

“It’ll be the best thing I can do if I can stay sober. Because generations of people have had their lives controlled and ruined by alcoholism and drug addiction. Sobriety first for me. Always.’
