DRDO successfully tests the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system. Watch

New Delhi: India has once again achieved great success in self-reliance in the defense sector. The Indian Navy has successfully tested an anti-submarine missile system. This missile system was developed by DRDO for the Navy. The Indian Navy on Wednesday successfully conducted a test of the Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo Missile System off the coast of Balasore in Odisha.

Let us tell you that this missile system is very important in the fight against submarines. It is a canister-based missile system that can hit long-range targets. SMART missiles can be launched from both warships and coastal areas.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Defense, SMART is a next-generation missile-based lightweight torpedo delivery system built to augment the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities far beyond the conventional range of lightweight torpedoes.

Details about the SMART anti-submarine missile system

– It is a canister-based long-range anti-submarine missile.

– It was developed by DRDO for the Indian Navy.

– The goal behind the project is to develop a rapid response system that can launch torpedoes from standoff distance.

– The missile has a range of 643 km and carries a lightweight torpedo with a range of 20 km and a 50 kg explosive warhead.

– SMART uses a two-way data link connected to airborne or ship-based submarine detection and identification systems.

– It can be launched from a surface ship or a truck-mounted shore battery.

– The rocket is powered by a two-stage solid propellant rocket and uses electromechanical actuators for course correction.

– The missile uses sea skimming to reduce its detection range.

– The first successful test of SMART was done on October 5, 2020 from Abdul Kalam Island.
