WORCESTER – State and local officials responded to a report of a bear walking on the roadway Sunday morning and fortunately were able to move it safely.

At approximately 8:15 a.m. Sunday morning, state police troopers at the Millbury Barracks received a call reporting a bear in the middle of McKeon Road, across Route 146 in Worcester. According to State Police Media Relations, city animal control was able to establish a temporary perimeter around the wild animal to keep both the public and the animal out of harm’s way.

State environmental police were eventually able to tranquilize the bear long enough to transport it to a more suitable location.

“Troopers and the Massachusetts Environmental Police positioned themselves close enough to the bear to calm the bear and take some interesting photos. The tranquilized bear was moved to a more accommodating location away from major roadways and population centers,” the statement from State Police Media Relations said. “After a refreshing nap, the bear was released unharmed.”

The state Department of Environmental Protection, along with state police and Worcester police, were able to calm the bear that roamed the city on Sunday and relocate the wild animal without injury. (MASS-STATE POLICE MEDIA RELATIONS)
