‘CAT 24’ tank tests underway in Latvia / Article

A tank competition will take place during the exercise, with the aim of strengthening the integration and firepower of NATO allies.

The exercise “CAT 24” will be attended by the crews of tank and combat vehicle units from Italy, Canada, Great Britain, Norway, Poland, Spain and Germany to work on unit tactics, techniques and procedures and to exchange experiences.

The winners of the competition can even take home a social trophy.

Previously, the same exercises took place within the framework of the military exercises “Iron Spear”, but this year the exercises have regained their historical name “CAT”. (Canadian Army Trophy). The tank competition called “CAT” was first held in 1963.

Canada leads NATO’s extended presence battle group in Latvia, which currently consists of more than 1,900 soldiers from Albania, the Czech Republic, Iceland, Italy, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Canada, serving in Latvia on a rotating basis and they serve alongside the domestic armed forces.

From May 1 to 3, shooting will take place both in daylight and in the dark. Live ammunition will be used during the exercises and residents of the neighborhood are appealed to be modest in the face of any nuisance this may cause.
