As today marks International Labor Day, President Paudel calls for creating an environment for decent labor practices

KATHMANDU, May 1: Today International Labor Day/Workers’ Day is observed and celebrated internationally, including Nepal, through various programs.

The 135th International Labor Day is being celebrated today with the slogan ‘Decent work, respect for workers: our campaign’.

This day is celebrated every year on May 1 as a day to guarantee the professional dignity and respect of employees and to establish their rights.

The Constitution of Nepal guarantees the right to employment and the right to work for all citizens and guarantees the right to social security based on fair wages, facilities and contributions for every worker.

Likewise, there is no discrimination in wages and social security on the basis of gender for equal work, in favor of equality.

While expressing his wishes on the occasion of May Day, President Ram Chandra Paudel said that domestic production and productivity should be increased by creating an environment for decent labor practices in the country.

He said the internal labor market must be strengthened for the country’s economic prosperity and the creation of a self-reliant economy.

In his congratulatory message, he said: “For the economic prosperity of the country, it is essential to build a self-sufficient and independent economy by increasing domestic production through the development of entrepreneurship.” Since the contribution of both entrepreneurs investing capital and workers investing labor and skills are equally important for entrepreneurship development, production and productivity should be increased by creating a decent working environment.

President Paudel expressed confidence that celebrating International Workers’ Day would inspire efforts to uphold labor rights, promote self-employment, ensure fair wages and increase social security, with an emphasis on the use of indigenous products.

Moreover, he emphasized the potential benefits for the working class through the implementation of constitutional provisions aimed at promoting a democratic, socialist-oriented economy in the country.
