Pusu-Namongo (U/E), April 21, GNA – The Widows and Orphans Movement (WOM), a gender-focused non-governmental organization, has urged vulnerable people, especially widows, orphans and disadvantaged groups, to engage writing for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

This, it was said, would help reduce the financial burden on them in accessing healthcare in the country.

The organization made this call while sensitizing women leaders and members of Assembly in Pusu-Namongo in Talensi District of the Upper East Region about the NHIS benefits package.

Organized, in partnership with ActionAid Ghana, the sensitization aimed at equipping the participants with the requisite knowledge on NHIS coverage to guide them in accessing healthcare, while enabling them to take advantage of the exemptions on the NHIS for vulnerable people in their community.

Mrs Nancy Awinbisa Amiziah, Project Officer at WOM, noted that although there were exemptions on the NHIS for some vulnerable categories of persons including persons with disabilities, indigenes and persons over 70 years of age, these people do not enjoy such benefits due to lack of knowledge .

“While we encourage our women and other vulnerable groups to enroll in the program, ultimately through this sensitization we also want to ensure that our women have access to the services offered by the NHIS, especially the waivers,” she said. declared.

“Some of them have vulnerable children who are exempted by policy from paying processing fees for obtaining the NHIS membership cards, but they still pay the full amount to be enrolled in the program, and the reason is simply that they are not aware of it”. She added.

She emphasized that the leaders, after being sensitized, were expected to in turn train their members in their respective communities to be aware of NHIS coverage so that they could effectively access healthcare services.

Mr Mumin Muttalib, Assistant Public Relations Officer, Talensi/Nabdam Districts of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), indicated that the authority was fully aware of the issues related to the NHIS as some cardholders complained that they were not enjoyed the full services covered by the NHIS. NHIS at the facility level and was therefore devising measures to curb the menace.

While encouraging the women to enroll in the program and renew their membership cards annually, he urged them to report any instances where they had to pay for services covered under the NHIS to the nearest NHIA offices for staff.

Ms Beatrice Saah, leader of women’s group Wakii Titeltaba, said the workshop had exposed her to so many things that she was not aware of as a member, adding: “I will ensure that everything learned here is passed on to my group members. ”

Mr Apana Atubila, Member of Parliament for Baare Constituency, thanked the organization for the relief and pledged to support vulnerable people in his community to enroll in the programme.
