Mayday! 24-hour healthcare workers take action for their own health

THROUGH THE VILLAGE SUN | Following a recent hunger strike, home care workers will gather at City Hall on May 1 and call for an end to “24-hour working days.”

The coalition in support of workers has grown. A number of politicians are expected to speak at the meeting on Wednesday, May 1 at noon.

Their employers claim that the caregivers are able to sleep for much of their full day shift. But the workers respond that they often have to get up in the middle of the night to pay their fees – and that this grueling duty is in turn terrible for their own physical and mental health, plus they are not paid accordingly.
