Ekiti students are protesting brutality and demanding justice for corps member allegedly shot by police

The Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union (FESSU) on Tuesday demanded justice for slain corps member Damilola Iyanda, who was reportedly shot by a trigger-happy police officer last week.

To this end, the students staged a peaceful protest at the State House of Assembly complex on Tuesday to press their demand.

The slain corps member, Iyanda, who hails from Ogotun-Ekiti, Ekiti South-West Local Government Area, was reportedly shot by a police officer deployed to the scene of the commotion that broke out during an after-party of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology. , Ogbomoso, convocation ceremony outside the school building.

The National Chairman of the Union, Benjamin Adekunle, who spoke on behalf of the students during the protest, demanded that a speedy investigation be conducted to confront the perpetrator with the wrath of the law.

He noted that the peaceful protest at the Ekiti State House of Assembly is to attract the attention of the Speaker of the House to contact his counterpart in Oyo State and bring justice to the deceased and the family .

He said: “We demand a speedy investigation into this case and the perpetrator must be brought to justice. We demand compensation for the family of the deceased.

“We demand comprehensive treatment for his brother, who suffered a gunshot wound. He is at home and his health is deteriorating. We demand an end to police brutality in Nigeria. The police should be our friend, save us and not kill us.

“We came to the House of Representatives today to speak to the Speaker to work with his counterpart in Oyo State for speedy justice for Iyanda Damilola and Iyanda Oluwafemi. They are from Ekiti State and grew up in Ogotun Ekiti.”

Reacting to the peaceful demonstration, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Adeoye Aribasoye, condemned the killing of the slain corps member.

He said the House would make a strong statement to condemn the senseless killing, adding that the police officer acted unprofessionally by killing a defenseless citizen.

“We extend our condolences to the family and condemn the killing and unprofessionalism of the police officer who killed one of us, a youth from Ekiti State who is also serving his homeland in cold blood.

“Whatever it is, I don’t believe that a police officer will take the life of a human being and shoot him who is not a criminal and defenseless citizen without provocation.

“We have condemned it and the House will meet. We will take a position during our plenary meeting. Our resolutions will be adopted and I know the House will condemn them. It is such a shame that his life is cut short,” the Speaker said.
