Who has the best food truck in Pueblo, Colorado? Wings on wheels

Pueblo foodies have done their part.

After voting heavily in the Pueblo Chieftain poll rating the best food truck in the Steel City, readers named their top restaurant Wings on Wheels, where chicken wings, smash burgers and loaded macaroni and cheese are among the menu highlights.

The Chieftain conducted a poll from April 5 to 26 with 27 local food trucks competing for top honors. The vote was intense, with more than 321,000 votes cast.

Wings on Wheels received more than 19% of the votes, leading second-place Double D’s BBQ, which finished with almost 16%. The battle for third place was fierce, with Ground Pounder Mobile Coffee on 13.99% and Stoke Pizza on 13.97%.

SmithGrubs narrowly beat out The Pork Chop Lady and Sam’s Street Tacos for fifth place, with the two food trucks also separated by less than one percentage point.

The top 10 was completed with Papa Mario’s Grilled Cheese, Rock Ya Belly, Smoke Something BBQ and Kitchen Works on the Go.

What makes Wings on Wheels special?

“Everyone loves our wings,” said owner Jennifer Fahrer, who drives the truck with her husband Bryan Fahrer. “The sweet bone-in red chili wings are my absolute favorite because they have a bit of a kick.”

Not to be outdone by the wings, Jennifer Fahrer said the smash burgers are “probably the best in Colorado.”

“100% great,” she says. “It’s the spices and the sauce that Bryan puts on them, plus they’re tender and juicy with crispy edges.”

Smash burgers come in the Colorado Burger and the braised green chile slopper varieties, both of which feature homegrown Pueblo chiles. The couple also makes mac and cheese dishes from scratch, with additions such as pulled pork or pulled chicken.

“We serve all-American comfort food. But we’re not just about food, we also want to provide great customer service,” said Jennifer Fahrer.

“I want everyone to feel like they are our friends,” she said.

Jennifer Fahrer’s brother, Stephen Stites, and his wife, Nicole, help keep the food truck running.

“All it takes is delicious food and a friendly smile to bring everyone together,” says Nicole Stites. “We love sharing our love of food with everyone, wowing them with our food and making great connections.”

How Wings on Wheels, or WOW, started

Wings on Wheels launched in March 2022 after the Fahrers hosted a Thanksgiving dinner featuring fried chicken wings that were so popular that their guests urged them to turn the tasty foodstuffs into a living.

“My husband and I both worked in the automotive industry and we got out when the company sold out to a major company,” said Jennifer Fahrer, so the timing was right for a new business venture. “We are a veteran-owned company; Bryan served in the U.S. Army.”

Unlike most food truck owners, the couple hits the road every winter, cooking for customers in Arizona in January and taking a road trip to Texas in February and April. During the warmer months they go to Colorado Springs, Grand Junction and other locations in Colorado.

In Pueblo, they can be found at events like Brew at the Zoo or setting up shop at Walter’s Brewery. They will cook at an event at Pikes Peak International Raceway in May.

“We love Pueblo,” said Jennifer Fahrer.

What the Chieftain Award means to Wings on Wheels

“It’s so exciting for me that I’m just, ‘Oh my God,’ I’m honored and humbled,” she said of winning the poll. “My heart is so full right now.”
