Ralph Lauren serves up Western-inspired luxury at a show in New York

Ralph Lauren gave a nod to the Beyonce-inspired cowboy trend for his latest runway show, a trend that has taken off since the release of the star’s Cowboy Carter album in March.

While the color palette was neutral, the 84-year-old designer went for metallics and knitwear for his autumn/winter collection – complete with cowboy hats, belts and boots.

Models walked the runway in nude, tailored jackets over a tonal shirt and tie, cropped knit sweaters and cardigans paired with sparkling mesh maxi skirts, sequined evening dresses and matching trousers and jackets.

Accessories included understated handbags, western belts, cowboy knee-high boots and hats.

Founded in 1967, Ralph Lauren was best known for its famous polo shirt, and the brand has a history of Americana clothing – rooted in America’s cultural heritage, so cowboy style makes a lot of sense for the latest collection.

This show – which took place in the designer’s private design studio, the catwalk reminiscent of a Manhattan gallery – was subdued compared to some of his most famous shows, including taking over Central Park and staging a catwalk show around his classic car collection .

Jessica Chastain, Glenn Close, Jodie Turner-Smith and Kerry Washington joined a star-studded roster of film, TV and music at the intimate show in New York – while muse and supermodel Christy Turlington, 55, talked about the catwalk walked.

“I’m getting a little fashion lesson from Ralph Lauren,” Chastain said after the show. There is a beautiful dress that came down (the runway) with a white lace collar and it was paired with a western belt, and I loved it.

“I never thought of combining that look. He’s the only designer who can (also) pull off a tuxedo with a pair of cowboy boots. He really has so much fun with his fashion and that’s what I’m used to. I’ve learned that I can break the rules.”
