Crime scene at Kersal Wetlands reopens weeks after human remains were found

Greater Manchester Police have reopened the scene at Kersal Wetlands, weeks after human remains were discovered.

Officers originally sealed off the site on Wednesday, April 17, just two weeks after a torso was found in the nature reserve.

But it has now been reopened as detectives ‘conduct further investigations’.

The new scene, which opened on Saturday evening as a result of research in the area, is located in Great Clowes Street and Kersal Wetlands.

It is part of a murder investigation that started when ‘a significant body part’ was found by a passer-by on Thursday, April 4.

GMP has confirmed that the reported ‘torso’, found in clear plastic, consists of the lower back, buttocks and thigh.

Chief Inspector Lewis Hughes from our Serious Crime Unit said: “I understand there has been significant public interest in the case so it is only right that we update you with our latest update.

“While our extensive search of the area was completed last week, we still have some additional questions that we plan to investigate as the day progresses.

“I would like to reassure you that this is a precautionary measure. Every piece of information we receive is thoroughly investigated, with every effort made to give us the best chance of finding out who our victim is and what happened to him.

“If you have any information you would like to share with us, or if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to my officers on site.

“At this stage we expect to be on site for several hours but there should be no disruption to the wider community. I would like to thank residents again for their patience and cooperation in assisting with our investigation. We will keep people informed as soon as we have more updates to share.”
