Muslim organizations and traders will observe bandh to condemn Neha’s murder and demand punishment for the accused

Muslim and trade bodies have decided to hold a voluntary bandh in Hubballi on Monday to condemn the killing of Neha Hiremath, a student. A silent protest march will be organized to demand the highest punishment for the suspects.

“All Muslim-run companies will down their shutters in Hubballi-Dharwad on Monday to condemn the murder and demand the highest punishment for the accused,” Ismail Tamatgar, president of Anjuman-e-Islam Society, told reporters on Sunday reporters.

Community leaders led by moulvis and elders have decided to put down the silent protest by wearing black bands. They will submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the office of the Deputy Commissioner, demanding strict action against the accused Fayaz Khandunayak.

“The Muslim community is deeply hurt by this crime. The accused Fayaz has brought shame to the entire community through this heinous crime,” Mr Tamatagar said. He said that no religion in the world advocates violence and murder.

“Such incidents must be strongly condemned. There should be no room in society for those who take the law into their hands and kill others. Unfortunately, these types of incidents continue to occur. Society must stand united and ensure that such incidents are not repeated,” he said.

Mr Tamatgar said that as a tribute to Neha Hiremath, the Anjuman-e-Islam Society has decided to name one of its blocks after her. Her parents will be asked to dedicate it.

Schools and college managements need to play a greater role in teaching moral values to youth, besides stepping up measures to provide safety to girl students. Adequate security guards should be appointed in schools. Teachers should monitor the behavior of students, meet parents regularly and also install CCTV cameras to check whether trespassers enter their premises and disturb the peace, he said.
