The big new restaurants in London will open in May 2024

This month sees the arrival of Jeremy King’s second major new restaurant, a new high-end rooftop restaurant, just in time for warmer weather, and a very different take on carbonara that isn’t for purists.

Bay water – 123 Bayswater Rd, London W2 3JH

The dust has settled on Arlington’s hugely successful launch, so it’s time for Jeremy King to turn his attention to the next restaurant he opens. This was originally the first restaurant announced as part of his new company. This all-day restaurant is quite a large restaurant, seating 190 people, and is promoted as serving American cuisine “with a European/California influence.” A very different beast from Arlington, this seems much more in the vein of a Corbin & King style, and should be the place for anyone taking a stroll through Hyde Park.

Opening: End of May

Peckham – 191 Rye Lane, London SE15 4TP

This restaurant in Peckham embraces ‘British’, cooking Italian food with British produce and food with ‘Italian influences’. At the forefront of this is their carbonara made with cream and topped with fried egg, which will have the purists reaching for the smelling salts. It comes from chef Alex Purdie (Bouchon Racine and Bocca di Lupo) and Richard Crampton-Platt (formerly director of operations at Bocca di Lupo), so there’s some serious talent behind the restaurant. They even provide a British breakfast, with fennel sausages, fried pizza dough and Tuscan beans.

Opening: May 8, 2024

Holland Park – 135 Portland Rd, London W11 4LW

Since its heyday as a celebrity draw in the 80s and 90s, Julie’s hasn’t done well since. This is the second attempt in recent years to revive its fortunes, but this time it looks promising. In charge is local Tara MacBain, who is transforming it into a French neighborhood brasserie. She has brought in chef Patron Owen Kenworthy (formerly at Brawn and The Pelican) to manage the menu, which will produce dishes such as lobster soufflé. Given Josephine’s success in Chelsea, this move into French cuisine certainly seems like a good move for Julie’s.

Opening: May 8, 2024

Withall – The OWO, 7 Horse Guards Ave, London SW1A 2EX

While it is clearly a hugely impressive building, the launch of The OWO has not seen the hotel’s restaurants break through in the same way as other recent openings such as The Peninsula. However, the opening of what will likely become their flagship restaurant should change that. Sushi master Endo Kazutoshi takes over the roof (in addition to a ground-floor sake bar that opened last week). The menu promises to be Japanese with a touch of Medical, with dishes like chashu pork ramen ravioli on the menu – so it’s something completely new for the chef. As the weather warms up, the roof terrace here will also be a real draw.

Opening: May 15, 2024

Hackney Wick – 13 Rookwood Way, Fish Island, London E3 2XT

There have been some very interesting openings in Hackney Wick over the past year and Inis sees that trend continuing. We serve a mix of British and Irish cuisine and anyone who knows our own background will see why we were immediately drawn to this opening. Leading the kitchen is Craig Johnson (formerly at Arbutus and The Corner Room) who serves up comforting dishes such as mussels and fries and garlic bread. They are offered a full Irish breakfast, including black and white pudding and roast potato farls.

Opening: May 2024 (date to be determined)

Marylebone – The Langham, 1C Portland Pl, London W1B 1JA

He closed both Le Gavroche and Roux in The Landau, but Michel Roux is not done with London yet. At his latest opening at The Langham (dressing rooms of his previous restaurant there), he presents a menu that promises British classics, prepared using traditional French cooking methods. What that means in practice is a restaurant that serves both Welsh rarebit and grilled lobster with fries and béarnaise.

Opening: May 22, 2024

Temple – South Wing, Somerset House, The Strand, London WC2R 1LA

After popping up all over the city, Rishim Sachdeva eventually settled in Mayfair with his “mostly vegan” restaurant Tendril. Now he’s bringing that concept to Somerset House in a new form, opening a ‘largely vegan’ cafe and deli. Unlike Tendril, this will last all day, with delicacies such as toasted banana bread on the menu. And there will be several dishes to take away, including his vegan tiramisu and his white bean spread/dip which we thought was absolutely amazing while visiting Tendril.

Opening: May 2024 (date to be determined)
