Jomtien Beach in Pattaya is experiencing a noticeable drop in the influx of tourists summer heat in Thailand reaches its peak. The beach, a popular location for sun seekers, swimmers and city dwellers looking for a reprieve from the city’s oppressive heat, has seen a marked decline in visitors.

Local reporters noted that the crowd was noticeably thinner than in the early months of the year, when visiting Jomtien Beach at exactly 2pm on Sunday, April 28.

Several factors may be responsible for this decline in visitor numbers. The post-Songkran holiday season and the current rising temperatures are undoubtedly a major contributor to this. The weather in particular seems to play a major role.

In recent days, the mercury in Pattaya and Banglamung district has risen to almost 40 degrees Celsius, a factor that may have deterred many from taking a trip to the beach.

In an attempt to better assess the situation, reporters contacted beach bank operators on Jomtien Beach. Most of them expressed a hopeful outlook, predicting that the beach would witness a modest increase in the number of tourists during the upcoming National Labor Day tomorrow, May 1, and subsequent weekends.

However, despite their optimistic predictions, their concern about their declining income was palpable. Some of them confessed that their current income was just enough to make ends meet. They further revealed that while they had a steady stream of customers, the majority of them were locals. The number of foreign and domestic tourists visiting Jomtien Beach was noticeably low, Pattaya News reported

Meanwhile, approximately 6,000 American sailors from the US Navy’s Carrier Strike Group 9 arrived in Pattaya this weekend to enjoy the beach and Pattaya’s infamous Walking Street. The sailors, who were on a rest and relaxation visit, arrived in Pattaya on April 24 and left on Sunday.

The visit, marked by their presence in various bars, restaurants and go-go bars, ultimately became a welcome economic boost for the city, especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
