Seven celebrities who free the nipple

When Valentino’s Fall/Winter 2022 show arrived in Rome two years ago, it wasn’t just then-creative director Pierpaulo Picolli’s designs that got the internet talking. In fact, it was a sheer, floor-length (PP Pink, of course – this was 2022, after all) dress worn by Florence Pugh that attracted the most attention. Why? Pugh had chosen to omit the padding intended to line the bust of the dress and instead let her bare breasts shine through. While some took to online to praise Pugh for releasing the nipple, others decided to criticize her for all sorts of reasons, with comments ranging from slut-shaming to body-shaming, and everything in between.

In an interview with Elle UKthe Oppenheimer actress got candid about the controversy.

“When everything went wrong with the pink Valentino dress a year ago, my nipples were visible through a piece of fabric, and that really turned people on. It is freedom that people fear; the fact that I feel comfortable and happy,” she said. “Oppressing women by commenting on their bodies has worked for a long time. I think we’re in a situation now where a lot of people are saying, ‘I don’t care.’

Pugh had also discussed the discourse before. The week after the runway, she took to Instagram and wrote a heartfelt letter to her critics.

“It is not the first time and certainly not the last time that a woman is told by a crowd of strangers what is wrong with her body. What is disturbing is how vulgar some of you men can be,” she wrote. , “Many of you aggressively wanted to let me know how disappointed you were by my ‘small tits’, or how I should be ashamed of myself for being so ‘flat breasted’.” Pugh concluded her post by writing, “Grow up. Respect people. Respect bodies. Respect all women. Respect people. Life will get a lot easier, I promise. And all because of two cute little nipples #fuckingfreethefuckingnipple.”
