Zebras go wild in the Washington neighborhood

A group of zebras fooled the residents of Washington this weekend!

Four of the striped equines became loose in a neighborhood on Sunday, April 28, after the driver of the truck transporting them stopped to secure the trailer.

“This is a first for me and everyone @wastepatrol troopers involved,” Washington State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson began a tweet shared on Sunday on X (formerly known as Twitter).

His post included two photos – each showing a single zebra arriving on the roadway just behind a police car.

“Four zebras being transported became loose when the driver stopped to secure the EB 90 trailer at exit 32. The community has come together to help. One cornered, three excellent. Crazy!!” his social media post continued.

In a sequel tweet shared on Monday, April 29, Johnson said one of the animals was still missing.

#ZebraUpdate. The 4th zebra is still at large. This is handled by King County Regional Animal Services. More updates as I get them! Beware of a zebra!!” he wrote at 1:50 p.m. local time.

The bizarre sighting caused many to do a double take.

Dan Barnett of North Bend, Washington, said he saw the zebras eating grass along the side of the exit ramp, Seattle news station King 5 reported.

His reaction to seeing a mini herd of zebras wandering along the road?

“A bit of disbelief, and actually: how can we help?” he told the outlet.

Barnett and other motorists did their best to clear and harm the animals from oncoming traffic.

“The cars on the exit stopped at the guardrail and lined up very close to form a kind of makeshift fence to prevent them from entering the exit area,” he said.

As officers and citizens worked together to protect the zebras, this caused the group of animals to spread into a nearby neighborhood.

“So I called someone and said, ‘So I found the missing zebras, they’re in my yard. Yeah, I don’t know what to do,'” Whitney Blomquist told King 5.

But they soon set their sights on another location.

“Two of them are in the barn just past my house,” Blomquist said, noting that the zebras had gone to her neighbor’s house.

Barnett added: ‘They are truly beautiful animals, and through no fault of their own they have ended up in a very confusing place. So let’s just hope they all come home.’

According to the Associated Press, the zebras were transported from Washington to Montana before their great escape.
