Manipur: Unnatural growth of 996 new villages in the state due to illegal immigration, says N Biren Singh

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh issued a warning on April 29, highlighting the alarming proliferation of 996 new villages attributed to illegal immigration. In a post on microblogging site X, Singh highlighted the serious threat this phenomenon poses to both indigenous communities and national security.

Singh’s post addressed a pressing issue that has been plaguing Manipur, and indeed the nation as a whole, for years. Since 2006, there has been a sharp increase in the establishment of new villages across Manipur, largely fueled by an uncontrolled influx of illegal immigrants from neighboring Myanmar. This influx has not only changed the demographic landscape, but has also resulted in the rampant destruction of forest cover, mainly to make way for settlements and illegal activities such as poppy plantations.

Furthermore, the encroachment by these illegal immigrants on resources, employment, land and the rights of indigenous people has exacerbated tensions in the region.

In response to this crisis, the Manipur government has taken steps to directly address the issue. Singh announced the start of collecting biometric data of illegal immigrants and geotagging their settlements, with the aim of curbing their uncontrolled proliferation and maintaining the integrity of the state’s borders.

Singh’s appeal extended beyond Manipur, urging all citizens to join the government in its efforts to protect the nation from the threats of illegal immigration.
