The travel and tourism sector is expected to add over 58 million jobs in India by 2033: report

New Delhi, April 29 India’s travel and tourism sector, which saw remarkable growth following the Covid-19 pandemic, is expected to add 58.2 million jobs across the country by 2033, a new report said on Monday.

In the pandemic year of 2020, the tourism sector accounted for 39 million jobs, or 8 percent of the country’s total workforce. Demand for talent in this sector registered a 44 percent spike in August last year, according to global technology and digital talent solutions provider NBL Services.

The travel and tourism sector, which serves as a vital source of foreign exchange, contributed Rs15.9 trillion ($191.25 billion) to the country’s economy in 2022 and was valued at Rs16.5 trillion in 2023.

Among the roles that will continue to rise in demand (year-on-year) are sales (18 percent), business development (17 percent), chefs (15 percent), travel advisors (15 percent), tour operators (15 percent), wildlife experts (12 percent), transportation providers (15 percent) and more, the report said.

From a location perspective, the top five states attracting domestic tourists so far are Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

According to the report, the top cities driving the workforce increase are Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Kochi.

Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh are among the two cities. According to the report, job creation is also expected in the emerging cities of Gujarat, Lakshadweep and West Bengal over the next nine years.
