The city of Newburgh’s police chief has been hired as safety director for Newburgh schools

City of Newburgh Police Chief Anthony Geraci has now been appointed director of school safety and security for Newburgh schools.

The Newburgh Enlarged City School District made the announcement Friday evening in a letter to the community and on Facebook.

“It is with great pride that I share the newest member of our Goldback family. At this afternoon’s special Board of Education meeting, Mr. Anthony Geraci was appointed as our new Director of School Safety and Security,” said Superintendent Jackielyn Campbell-Manning.

Geraci was hired as police chief for the city of Newburgh in 2021 and previously served as police chief in Watervliet, in the Capitol region. Early in his career in Newburgh, he was often seen at crime scenes with officers and led the department through a series of near-daily shootings, including one incident that sent four teenagers to the hospital.

Since then, News 12 has been unable to speak directly to the police chief, when City Manager Todd Venning executed a so-called “gag order,” requiring all questions and communications to come from his office.

Geraci is said to have submitted his resignation on Friday. News 12 called the city to confirm but has not yet heard back
