A week in work outfits with artist Wanissa Somsuphangsri

Fitted trousers, comfortable sneakers and playful accessories.

If you work in a creative role, it can be difficult to know how to dress for the day. Instead of a set uniform of crisp white shirts and tailored black pants (as much as I love them), an ever-changing schedule means that each morning requires a series of questions. Am I running or just sitting at my desk? Do I need to dress specifically for a project? And most importantly, am I in the background of someone’s TikTok?

This week, LCI Melbourne graphic and digital design mentor and artist, Wanissa Somsuphangsri, shows us what a typical week looks like for her. Born in Bangkok, Wanissa’s work is inspired by her multicultural background and love of handmade letterforms.

From recording podcasts and leading LCI students in design education to spending days in the tattoo studio, Wanissa’s schedule is constantly changing. Her work wardrobe includes trousers, comfortable sneakers and playful accessories. Scroll ahead to see what she wore all week.

Monday

On Mondays I teach design at LCI Melbourne. My work outfits are usually super comfortable and easy to move around. As an art and design institute, the mentors are quite casual and creative with our outfits. Today when I went to teach a class at our beautiful Collingwood campus, I decided to wear my favorite olive green jacket from Havehad, a Korean streetwear store I discovered in Seoul last year.

They have flattering basics with really nice, oversized cuts that I love. I also wore my high-rise Uniqlo wide leg pants and my green round mini shoulder bag, also from Uniqlo. This bag is viral for a reason! It is so light and comfortable to wear. My inner top is a black crop top from Kookai.

Tuesday

I normally work from home on Tuesdays, but today I went into the studio to get some photos taken for an upcoming podcast Future History. In this podcast I talk about my creative journey from graphic designer to lettering artist, design academic and now tattoo student.

I wear my linen pants Nique, because I love the cut and the high waist. I’m also wearing a super soft black sleeveless top that I bought in Thailand many years ago, along with my beloved tortoiseshell earrings from Emeldo.

Wednesday

Wednesday is my work from home day. I’m often busy with administration or drawing new flash designs. As a self-employed artist it is sometimes difficult to find free time, but I make sure I take a break outdoors or go for a walk and get some fresh air.

Here I take a walk along the river, just a few minutes from my apartment. I wore my Gorman bucket hat with a knitted skirt I bought in Seoul last year.

Because it was warm enough, I’m wearing a crop top today, but this skirt also looks nice with an oversized sweater. I recently bought myself a pair of Twoobs platform sandals and love how comfortable they are to walk in.

Thursday

I’m in the studio today. I am a tattoo apprentice at Mid City Tattoo, located in the heart of Melbourne CBD. I love going to the studio because it is so beautiful and peaceful. Today I’m wearing a jumpsuit from Ganni. Jiyu, my dear mentor and founder of the studio space, gave me this jumpsuit and I wear it all the time. Because I work with ink that permanently stains clothing, I often wear all black for convenience so I don’t have to worry about ink spilling while tattooing.

Sunday

Sunday is my day off. Today we went to a friend’s place for lunch in Eltham. I’m wearing a colorful long-sleeved top from Suku, paired with wide-leg jeans from Thrills. I often prefer neutral or muted tones, but it was sunny today and I was in the mood for a bit of color.
