Crime against seniors: Active patrols needed

Sir,

This relates to the news item entitled “False Accidents: Senior Citizens Targeted Again and Again” in yesterday’s Star of Mysore, where an 80-year-old gentleman recently fell victim to a murder twice in one month in a rather unconventional manner. raid. .

On both occasions he was followed by someone on a scooter, accused of causing an accident and then coerced into handing over money.

As much as we prepare to respond calmly to such situations, the reality is that panic inevitably arises when confronted with these aggressive and intimidating individuals. It appears that these criminals lurk on the streets and target seniors who drive carefully and slowly, making them easy prey for robberies.

While I understand that it is a challenge for police to arrest every criminal and address every crime, it is disheartening to see our city becoming increasingly hostile to seniors.

I plead with the police and concerned authorities to come up with effective measures to arrest these criminals. Increasing the number of CCTVs on major roads could be a solution, along with more frequent patrolling. The Police Manual may offer innovative solutions that I may not have thought of yet.

Please do not suggest that seniors simply need to be more careful. They are already cautious, but city leaders should strive to create an environment where they can feel safe and free from the burden of hypervigilance.
