Islamabad (Pakistan), April 21 (ANI): Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday wrote a letter to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, demanding punishment for those who subverted the Constitution in cases related to charges of six The Islamabad High Court (IHC) ruled on interference in judicial affairs by the country’s intelligence apparatus, Pakistan-based Dawn reported.

The development comes after six judges of the Islamabad High Court leveled allegations against interference in judicial affairs by Pakistan’s intelligence apparatus.

On March 25, six IHC judges wrote a letter to members of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), detailing attempts to pressure judges through kidnapping, torture of their relatives and secret surveillance in their homes.

Justices Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, Babar Sattar, Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, Arbab Muhammad Tahir and Saman Rafat Imtiaz had signed the letter, the Dawn report said.

In the letter, Imran Khan called it “ironic” that those who were supposed and obliged to provide justice were seeking it themselves. He stated that the IHC judges’ demand for a judicial convention to investigate the case “would have exposed the extent of this interference and would have shown to what extent, institutionally, those who are armed with weapons continue to overpower with the pen.”

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan said the actions taken by the Supreme Court so far are ‘meek and indecisive’. He stressed that the situation requires “strict action on the part of the SC to quickly rectify the system” to assist all high courts and lower courts.

Imran Khan stated: “This calls for assembling and putting in place a robust mechanism of enforcement and accountability that will revive the independence of the judiciary. And this calls for punishing those who have violated the Constitution unconstitutionally undermined, as previously stated.”

“Failure to do so will dismantle and destroy public confidence in Pakistan’s justice system, which is already undergoing significant erosion,” he added.

Imran Khan said the rule of law and the supremacy of the constitution in Pakistan had fallen to a “new low,” leading to the “gradual emergence of jungle law and the introduction of the primitive doctrine that might is right.”

He warned that if the situation were to prevail, it would be fatal to any civilized order in the world, especially if the higher judiciary did not “intervene meaningfully.” In his letter, Imran Khan raised seven issues and said these circumstances required “immediate action,” the Dawn report said.

Imran Khan criticized the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for dismissing Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif in the Toshakhana vehicle case and said the anti-corruption agency is “making a mockery of our legal system” by the exoneration of the former Prime Minister, despite this having previously been pursued as an ‘open and shut case’.

He demanded a thorough probe into Lt Gen Nazir Ahmed Butt’s conduct as NAB chairman over the “dishonesty, discrimination and double standards practiced by NAB”, Dawn reported.

The PTI founder said he believed that more than 90 percent of the people arrested over the incidents of violence, arson and looting linked to the May 9 protests were “peaceful and unarmed protesters who do not indulge in any violence surrendered.”

Imran Khan said a constitutional petition demanding an independent, transparent and thorough investigation to determine the instigators and perpetrators of the May 9 violence, and those who escalated it, was pending in the Supreme Court since May 25, 2023. He stated that the matter should be heard and decided on a priority basis in the interest of ‘full justice’.

Speaking about the alleged rigging in the February 8 general elections, Imran Khan stated that the Supreme Court should hear the petitions on the manner in which the polls were conducted on priority and decide on them, Dawn reported.

In the letter, Imran Khan stated: “Inaction on your part and that of the SC on any of the above matters of paramount importance would aggravate the constitutional crisis already facing the country and push it ever closer to the abyss. ” (ANI)
