According to Interfax, Russian troops have captured a village in Donetsk

Russian troops have taken control of another village in Donetsk, as the Ukrainian leader once again pleads with his Western partners to supply Kiev with more weapons and ammunition to stop Moscow’s continued victories.

The Interfax news agency Sunday quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying Novobakhmutivka, a village in eastern Ukraine close to Ocheretyne, has come under the control of Russian forces. The village has been the center of heavy fighting in recent days.

It added that Russian forces also repulsed a series of Ukrainian counterattacks near Khasiv Yar, another key point in the region where the sides have clashed repeatedly.

Russian forces have made notable gains in the eastern Donetsk region over the past week, demonstrating Russia’s advantage in manpower and ammunition on the battlefield.

On Saturday, Russian troops managed to penetrate “deeply” into the Ukrainian defense lines in Donetsk.

“As a result of active operations, the troop unit ‘Center’ liberated the village of Novobakhmutivka in the Donetsk People’s Republic,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in its daily battlefield briefing.

Novobakhmutivka is located about 10 kilometers north of Avdiivka, which Russia captured in February.

Earlier this week, a source close to the Ukrainian armed forces accused the leaders of Ukrainian units in the area of the “collapse of defenses throughout the region, causing significant losses.”

Russia noted that Ukrainian military commanders had admitted that forces in Kiev had deteriorated while Russian forces achieved “tactical successes” in the area.

Earlier this month, the Ukrainian head of intelligence at the Defense Ministry, Kyrylo Budanov, said the battlefield situation for Ukraine was likely to deteriorate around mid-May to early June.

On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his pleas to his Western allies to further support him by supplying more weapons and ammunition to Kiev’s armed forces to fight against Russian forces.

Kiev is awaiting the arrival of billions of dollars in US weapons, which it hopes will help strengthen its forces in the fight against Russian forces.

Last week, Washington approved a new aid package as it continues to provide US military support to Ukraine.
