Local MPP’s motion to reduce distractions in classrooms passes Ontario legislature

The Ontario Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed a motion introduced by a local MPP to curb distractions in schools.

Kitchener South-HePlayer MPP Jess Dixon introduced the motion calling on Education Minister Stephen Lecce to create policies around cracking down on cell phone use and restrictions on the use and possession of tobacco, vape, recreational cannabis and nicotine products. Dixon called the death an “important step” in raising awareness of student well-being around distractions at school.

“In an age where technology permeates every aspect of our lives, it is critical that we take proactive steps to mitigate its negative effects, especially in our schools,” Dixon said in a news release. “My motion aims to call on the government to take action on the urgent issue of distraction caused by smartphones and the need to strengthen regulations and policies around the use of tobacco, vape, recreational cannabis and nicotine products on school grounds.”

Dixon said the motion aligns with the Ontario government’s ‘Back to Basics’ strategy to protect the well-being of young people and highlight a focused learning environment in Ontario schools.

“The passage of this motion underscores bipartisan commitment to prioritizing the needs of our youth and fostering a supportive educational environment,” said a statement from Dixon’s office. “By working together across party lines, members of the Legislative Assembly have sent a clear message of solidarity in tackling the challenges facing our schools and communities.”

Dixon was first elected to the seat for Kitchener South-HePlayer in 2022 as a Progressive Conservative.
