Cooling Foods for Pets: 7 Fruits and Vegetables to Include in Your Dog’s Summer Diet

Amid the ongoing heat wave in many parts of the country, hydration plays an important role in your furry friend’s diet for overall well-being. In addition to offering plenty of water to drink, it’s important to include liquid foods and seasonal fruits and vegetables that can help cool their bodies. Dogs are at increased risk of heatstroke and dehydration because their thick coats can prevent heat from escaping and sweat glands work well, mainly in the pads of their feet. To ensure that your dog feels comfortable in the scorching summer heat, you need to make crucial changes in his diet by adding fiber-rich, hydrating and nutritious fruits and vegetables to his meals. Smolders suggests seven fresh foods you can safely add to your dog’s diet during the warm months:

1. Cucumber: These are perfect for hydration and are very low in calories, making them an excellent choice for dogs. They also contain vitamins K and C and magnesium, which support overall health.

2. Watermelon: This fruit is a hydration hero with a water content of 92%. It is also a good source of vitamins A, B6 and C, which are essential for maintaining healthy skin and coat. Be sure to remove all seeds and skin to avoid choking and gastrointestinal blockages. Also, don’t give your dogs watermelon more than twice a week because the sugar content is also high.

3. Carrots: Carrots are a great source of fiber and vitamin A and can improve a dog’s dental health and vision. They can be served raw or cooked and provide a nutritious, crunchy snack. Once cut into sticks, these can also be frozen to make a cooling snack.

4. Sweet potatoes: Sweet potatoes are packed with dietary fiber and vitamins A and C and support digestion and are best served boiled and pure. The best variety of sweet potatoes for dogs is the orange variety.

5. Apples: These provide vitamins A and C and help remove debris from a dog’s teeth. Always remove the core and seeds to avoid a choking hazard for your dog.

6. Blueberries: These little fruits are antioxidant powerhouses, supporting the immune system and overall health. They are also great for older dogs as they help with cognitive functions.

7. Cottage cheese/yogurt: Yogurt is rich in calcium and protein and is beneficial for your dog’s bones and teeth. It also helps improve digestion. Make sure it is unsweetened and without artificial sweeteners, which can be toxic to dogs. Chilled chicken soup is also a great way to keep your dog cool.

In addition to keeping your dogs cool with this food, it is also important to ensure that your dogs are not walked in the mid-afternoon when the sun is at its brightest.

Including these foods in your dog’s diet can improve his health by providing the necessary nutrients and hydration needed during the warm months. Always introduce new foods gradually and monitor your dog for any side effects. Fresh, varied foods not only promote health, but also add more fun to your dog’s daily meal,” concludes Smolders.
